It seems a One Direction reunion was closer than fans thought.
Liam Payne was laid to rest on November 20, almost a month after he plunged 45-feet from a third floor balcony at the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires. Reports indicate the singer experienced “multiple traumas,” including a skull fracture.
Stars including his former bandmates and Rita Ora are honoring his memory by listening to his music and watching videos of him. And fans have found archived clips – with one giving the answer to a pressing question.
One Direction left fans devasted in 2015 when Malik announced he was leaving the band. Fans continued to stay hopeful for a reunion sometime in the future.
Shortly after Liam’s shocking death, someone took to X with a sad realization.
The user said: “Crazy to think One Direction gang will have a reunion at the funeral of their beloved.”
Before this was reality, Payne had made a statement to Promiflash in 2018, which might have been the reason fans stayed hopeful up until the end.
“You know I think it (a reunion) will happen at some point in the distant future,” he admitted.
The singer went on to say that the meeting was something the boys started discussing.
He added: “We’ve all spoken about it and, you know, the dream for this most fantastic show that could be, is amazing.”

During the time, many of the band members were at the height of their solo careers. Payne shared that this was partly the reason he wanted the reunion to happen soon so the world could see how well they had all done.
“With everybody being so successful, this in part now is so important for us to be able to make that show,” he explained.
Payne concluded his statement saying that he believes the reunion was as important then as it was when the group was performing together.
“It’s the only way really that One Direction could get any bigger. It’s the only way we could get more successful really, isn’t it? By being good on you’re own,” he said.
